About

An English school that happens to be online

Tongue teaches English the way a school does, with levels, groups, instructors and a plan, and runs all of it in your browser.

What Tongue is

Tongue is an online English school. You do not buy a pack of videos and you are not left alone with an app: you are placed at a level, you join a group of that level, and you learn in live sessions with instructors.

Everything a learner needs lives in the same account: the placement test, the group and its timetable, the live classroom, tasks and feedback, attendance, messages and bills.

How it works

How it teaches

Five ideas shape how studying here works.

  1. Small live groups

Teaching happens in live sessions, in groups with a limited number of seats. A group that is full stops accepting enrolments. Each group has its own instructors, its own weekly timetable and its own group chat.

  2. A level-by-level roadmap

Courses follow levels in order. You start at the level a placement tester assigns you, and each level has an academic roadmap: the stages and items the group has to complete before the level is finished.

  3. Different sessions for different skills

A group's week is made of different kinds of sessions, each with its own purpose. The exact mix and the times belong to each group and are shown on its page.

  4. Tasks and feedback

Between sessions, instructors set tasks. You submit your work, the instructor reviews it, and the feedback stays attached to the task. Instructors can also write general feedback on your progress.

  5. Progress measured by what was learned

Your progress percentage is calculated from the roadmap items that are completed. A level is complete when its roadmap is finished, the final assessment is done and administration confirms it.

The session types the school uses

The exact timetable differs from group to group. Each group's page shows its real week: day, session type and time.

  • Main Session

The core lesson, where the main material of the level is covered.

    Usual length: 60 minutes

  • Speaking

Conversation practice: time to use what you have learned out loud.

  • Shadowing

Listening to a model and repeating along with it to build rhythm and fluency.

    Usual length: 30 minutes

  • Reading

Reading texts together and working on understanding and vocabulary.

    Usual length: 45 minutes

  • Output Session

Producing language yourself, in speech or writing, with what the group has covered.

  • Assessment

A session used to assess learners, including the final assessment of a level.

Plain facts

Things worth knowing before you start.

  • You need an official level before you can choose a group.
  • Live sessions are not recorded, and the classroom chat is not saved.
  • You are never moved to the next level automatically: you choose your next group yourself.
  • The platform does not take card payments. Bills are recorded by the school's administration.
  • If a required bill is due and unpaid, joining live sessions pauses until it is paid.
